Social Media: Worth Your Time as a Writer?
with Lainey Cameron

Free Admission
via Zoom

A social media presence is often portrayed as a must-have for writers. But is it truly worth the energy, or is social media an unnecessary time sink, stealing time you should use for writing?

This two hour workshop focuses on the role social media plays in building a broader author marketing platform, and how to decide which social media are worth your time, if any.

We’ll cover the advantages and downsides of different platforms for writers (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn), even Goodreads and BookBub. We’ll also talk about newer forums such as Substack and serialized writing platforms like Wattpad.

We’ll cover how regular blogs are becoming less useful as a format, the role of an email newsletter as compared to social media, and why the best time to start is before you’re published.

Lainey will share examples of good (and unfortunate) use of social media, and key elements you should pay attention to (your bio, private versus public accounts, how to avoid falling for common scams). Also, social etiquette on connecting with readers and faux pas to avoid.

She’ll also explain ways to streamline and decrease the time you spend online –  how to automate posts to Facebook or Instagram, TikTok tips to avoid losing yourself for hours, and how selecting  “content buckets” will ease the regular creation of posts or stories.

If you’d like to discuss specific questions, Lainey would love to hear from participants in advance at lainey@laineycameron.com
