The writing and publishing retreat at the beautiful Holy Wisdom Monastery, on October 5, 2019, in Middleton Wisconsin, was a brilliant success. More than 80 participants came from all over Wisconsin and beyond to share and participate in the event. Our Wisconsin Writers Association hosted the retreat with Barry Wightman, President of WWA, guiding the event from 7:30 a.m. to its conclusion at 5:00 p.m., as our Master of Ceremonies. WWA Board member Adrienne Hulburt-Stroud owner of Common Ground in Middleton provided a delicious assortment of food, sweets and drink.

The program featured Wisconsin Poet Laureate Peggy Rozga, Chicago historical mystery writer Susanna Calkins, and Wisconsin authors Nick Chiarkas, Kim Suhr and Elizabeth Jorgensen. Three well-known Wisconsin publishers, HenschelHAUS, OrangeHat, and Cornerstone Publishing engaged the panel in a discussion of Pathway to Publication. There was an amazing amount of participation by all. In addition to being a most informative day it was just plan fun and good comradery among writers and publishers.

The program also included an awards presentation recognizing the winners of 2019 WWA Jade Ring and High School writing contests. The award winners captivated the attendees with their readings. An amazing and wonderful time was had by all. Where should we do this next?

Send your ideas for the next retreat location to WWA President Barry Wightman.

St. Croix Writers and Wisconsin Writers Association organized and sponsored the Fall Northland Writers Conference in Solon Springs, WI, September 28, 2019. The full-day event drew more than 60 attendees, and was held at the village community center. Brian Freeman, internationally-known psychological thriller writer, and newly-named author to continue the Jason Bourne franchise, was keynote presenter. Guest speakers included Karla Huston, Abby Frucht, and Barry Wightman. Many other Wisconsin, Minnesota and regional writers networked with writers and readers from all around the Northland, sharing their talents and ideas. The busy vendor hall hosted over a dozen authors and publishers, with their works. Excellent snacks and lunch were provided by Room at the Table Bakery and Catering, Cloquet, MN. Artisanal coffees were provided by Headwaters Roasting, Solon Springs, WI. An outstanding event!
